Shopping Portals Explained

How shopping portals like Rakuten pay you for buying online, how to earn points instead of cash, the 13 reasons a portal purchase fails to track, and how to pick the best portal for a store.

A shopping portal is a website that pays you a share of the commission a store pays it for sending you there. You click through the portal to the store, buy as normal, and weeks later the portal pays you cash back, or points or miles. It costs nothing extra, and it stacks on top of what your credit card earns.

How A Portal Makes Money, And Why It Pays You

Stores run affiliate programs: they pay a commission to sites that send them buyers. A portal takes that commission and gives most of it back to you. Rakuten puts it this way: "Stores pay Rakuten a commission for referring shoppers to them. Rakuten keeps a portion of this commission and shares the rest with you as Cash Back" (Rakuten Help, read 2026-09-30).

The rate is a percentage of what you spend. Rakuten's own example: spend $100 at a store offering 5% and you earn $5 (same source).

Portals come in three kinds:

  • Cash back portals such as Rakuten, which pay cash.
  • Airline and hotel portals, which pay miles or points in that program.
  • Bank portals, run by card issuers, which pay the bank's own points.

The store is the same in each case; only the currency and the rate change.

How To Earn Points Instead Of Cash At Rakuten

Rakuten pays cash by PayPal or check, or pays in Bilt Points, and eligible American Express cardholders can choose Membership Rewards points instead (Rakuten Help).

The conversion is one for one: a store paying 2% cash back pays 2 Membership Rewards points per dollar, so a $100 purchase earns 200 points instead of $2 (The Points Guy, August 22, 2025). The option needs a card that earns Membership Rewards, such as the Amex Platinum or Amex Gold, per the same article.

Is it worth switching? Do the math with published values:

  • 200 Membership Rewards points at Frequent Miler's 1.5 cents (read 2026-09-30) is about $3.00, versus $2.00 in cash.
  • But if you would cash those points out as a statement credit at about 0.6 cents each (point.me, August 27, 2026), 200 points is $1.20, worse than the cash.

Switch only if you move Amex points to airline or hotel partners. The Points Guy's article warns that once you switch away from Membership Rewards, "you won't be able to go back", so decide carefully.

When You Get Paid

Rakuten pays every three months, on February 15, May 15, August 15 and November 15, as long as you earned more than $5 in the quarter (Rakuten Help). A balance of $5 or less rolls into the next quarter.

So a purchase in early October might not pay out until February. Other portals have their own schedules. Before you count on the money, check that the order shows in the portal's pending balance.

Why A Portal Purchase Fails To Track

Portals track your purchase with a cookie or a browser extension. Anything that breaks that link can cost you the reward. Rakuten's own help page lists these reasons you may not earn (Rakuten Help, read 2026-09-30):

  1. You did not activate cash back through Rakuten before adding items to your cart.
  2. You finished checkout in a different browser tab from the one Rakuten opened.
  3. You used a coupon code not listed on Rakuten ("may void Cash Back").
  4. You declined the store's cookies.
  5. A VPN, cookie blocker or ad blocker interfered.
  6. The item was in a category the store excludes.
  7. You returned or canceled the order.
  8. You bought gift cards ("Most gift cards are excluded"), or paid with gift cards.
  9. Taxes and shipping, which "are never eligible".
  10. You ordered by chat, phone or customer service.
  11. You sat idle too long and the session timed out.
  12. Another rewards extension or site took the credit.
  13. The store pays different rates for different item categories.

The practical routine: start from the portal, turn off ad blockers for the store, put the items in your cart after you click through, check out in the same tab, and do not use a coupon code the portal does not list. Take a screenshot of the order confirmation in case you need to file a missing reward claim.

One Portal Per Purchase

Assume only one portal gets credit for an order. Rakuten's help page warns that other sites, "especially ones that offer shopping rewards", can void its cash back (Rakuten Help). Clicking through a second portal, or letting another rewards extension activate, can replace the first one. Pick one portal before you shop and click through it last.

How To Pick The Best Portal For A Store

Rates for the same store differ a lot between portals and change often. Comparison sites track this for you. Cashback Monitor compares rates at 15,000 or more stores across 42 portals, with separate views for cash back, travel miles and credit card points (Cashback Monitor, last full update September 30, 2026).

When comparing a cash portal with a miles portal, convert first. A store paying 4% cash is 4 cents per dollar. The same store paying 3 miles per dollar on an airline portal, at 1.3 cents per mile, is 3.9 cents. Close enough that you should take the cash unless you need those specific miles.

Points per dollar is the same scale Pointsflare uses to grade deals: 4% cash back counts as 4 points per dollar. That is below the 10 point line for a Good deal on its own. Portals get interesting when a store runs a bonus rate, or when you stack the portal with a card offer, which our guide on stacking a shopping portal, card and offer covers step by step.

Is It Worth The Effort?

For planned online purchases, yes: clicking through a portal adds about a minute. On a $200 order at 4%, that minute earns $8. The effort is not worth it for tiny orders at low rates, or for stores that exclude most of what you buy. Read the store's terms on the portal page before large purchases.

FAQ

Are Shopping Portals Safe To Use?

Large portals such as Rakuten are established businesses that earn from store commissions; you do not pay more for your purchase. As with any site, use a strong password, and review what data a browser extension asks for before installing it.

Can I Use A Portal And My Credit Card Rewards At The Same Time?

Yes. The portal pays on the purchase through its tracking, and your card pays its normal rate on the charge. They are separate programs, so both apply unless a card or offer's terms say otherwise.

Why Is My Portal Reward Still Pending?

Pending means the portal has recorded the order but not paid it yet. Rakuten pays on its next quarterly date once your balance is over $5, and returned or canceled orders do not earn at all.

Do Gift Card Purchases Earn Portal Rewards?

Usually not. Rakuten says most gift cards are excluded, and purchases paid with gift cards may also not earn. Check the store's terms on the portal before you buy.

Should I Earn Amex Points Or Cash From Rakuten?

Earn points if you transfer Amex points to airline or hotel partners, where published values are around 1.5 cents or more. Take cash if you would redeem Amex points for statement credits, which are worth about 0.6 cents each. The switch away from points is one way.

Pointsflare grades portal bonuses on the same points per dollar scale as every other deal. See this week's deals.
